It’s a unique project. After more than forty years in captivity, Kariba, an African elephant captured in the wild, will finally be heading for a new life.

In 2026, thanks to an unprecedented collaboration between GAIA, Pakawi Park and the Pangea Sanctuary, Kariba will be transferred to a 400-hectare refuge in Portugal, where she will be able to live freely, surrounded by other elephants.

 More info on Kariba

This exceptional project marks a turning point for animal welfare in Europe.
Torn from her family in the 1980s, exploited in a circus, and then moved from zoo to zoo, Kariba has lived alone since the death of her companion Jenny.
Today, an unprecedented movement is giving her a second chance — and paving the way for a more dignified future for all captive elephants.

“Kariba embodies the hope for lasting change: the hope of seeing elephants live not in enclosures, but in sanctuaries where they can finally be themselves.

Ann De Greef
Director - GAIA
